#Give65 for Emergency and Holiday Meals for home bound seniors. www.give65.org/HESSCO

Mr. and Mrs. S have been receiving home delivered meals for the better part of the past year. Mr. S. reflects that he and his wife were very sick, and one their nurse’s suggested HESSCO. Mrs. S explained, “I used to do the cooking, but can’t do it now because of my back.” Having had three back surgeries has left Mrs. S homebound and with mobility issues. The home delivered meals, “Take the worry away about the food…The meals come every day,” and the couple report that the volunteers are, “Wonderful.” Although their daughter provides a lot of help, she goes into Boston every day for work and can’t be there all the time. By receiving home delivered meals, the couple and their family can be assured that a nutritious meal will be delivered each day. The emergency, shelf-stable meals that are also provided is added insurance if for some reason the home delivered meals program is closed due to inclement weather. During this year’s #GIVE65 Event, HESSCO is working to make sure every senior in the program continues to have the security of emergency meals to supplement their home delivered meals.

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Every year an estimated 5 million older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. And that's only part of the picture: Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported, as many as 23 cases go unreported. HESSCO is the local agency designated by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs to screen reports, investigate and work with persons over 60 who may be the victim of physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, self-neglect or financial exploitation.
