Stay Safe During Extreme Heat
Drink plenty of water, stay indoors or in air conditioning during the hottest hours, wear lightweight clothing, and avoid strenuous activity, alcohol, and too much caffeine. Check on older neighbors, friends, and family members.
Watch for signs of heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, dizziness, weakness, nausea, muscle cramps, clammy skin, rapid pulse, or fainting.
Move the person to a cool place, loosen clothing, apply cool wet cloths, and offer small sips of water if they are alert.
Call 911 immediately for confusion, seizures, fainting, very hot skin, worsening symptoms, or suspected heat stroke.
Need a place to cool off? Visit a local library, senior center, community center, or shopping center. Contact your Council on Aging or Town Hall, or call Massachusetts 2-1-1 to find a nearby cooling center.
